Spark from Heaven: The Mystery of the Madonna of Medjugorje
Published in Paperback by Ave Maria Press (August, 1988)
Author: Mary Craig
Average review score:

The greatest book on Medjugorje I've ever read.
If you just read one book on Medjugorje, this is the one. Mary Craig writes from an objective point of view on the apparitions in Medjugorje. Originally there to produce a documentry for BBC television, she ended up believing the events (after witnessing the sun dance )and writing a book. This book is the most factual, informative and realiable book written yet on Medjugorje. This book takes the reader back to the early 1980's when six teenagers saw the Mother of God on their village hill and the events that flowed from it. It tells of their questioning by the communist officials, their encounters with the local bishop and their perserverence in proclaiming the apparitions in the face of so much adversity. No other Medjugorje writing comes close to this book. While others try to turn the events into a class on theology, this book tells the facts. Whatever one feels about God or Mary, one cannot ignore the facts. This book will enlighten all who read it.

An amazing and painstakingly researched resource
The newest title in the outstanding "Sports and Games through History" series from Greenwood Press, Sports And Games Of The Ancients by sports historian Steve Craig is an amazing and painstakingly researched resource offering insights into the history of what was to evolve into modern-day sports and games. Many of the physical sports were practiced as much to emphasize survival skills as to relax and play. Ancient sports worldwide are discussed and evaluated in this adventurous and detailed repository filled with fascinating facts for true sports lovers. Also very highly recommended for sports history enthusiasts are the other two titles in this unique series: Sports And Games Of Medieval Cultures , and Sports And Games Of The 18th And 19th Centuries .

Spreadsheet Modeling in Corporate Finance
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (15 May, 2002)
Author: Craig W. Holden
Average review score:

Excellent learning tool
Although intended as a supplement for textbooks used in college level business courses, this book is also valuable to working professionals who deal with financial modeling. Because I am a consultant and project manager I'm going to slant this review towards how my peers will benefit from the book. It's value outside of my narrow scope should be apparent.

First, unlike other books that teach spreadsheet modeling, the spreadsheets that come on the CD ROM are not finished products. Instead the author has chosen spreadsheets that use dynamic charts to illustrate concepts in an interactive manner (drag a control to change the parameters and the chart changes - this is a powerful teaching tool in or out of the classroom).

Second, the book needs to be read in sequence because spreadsheets you build in one chapter are the basis for refinements and added complexity in later chapters. This leads to highly complex spreadsheets, such as the model in chapter 16 (Life-Cycle Financial Planning), which incorporates tax parameters (federal and state levels), benefits analysis and other factors.

In all there are 53 spreadsheets presented in this book, and you build them. The author calls this "active learning" (as opposed to passive learning where you are provided templates), and it is effective because you are the one who builds the models and tools while following the book. Note that this book does NOT purport to teach Excel programming, but how to build models using Excel's basic features and functions.

As a consultant and project manager the parts of this book that were immediately useful to me were: Parts I (Time Value of Money), III (Capital Budgeting) and IV (Financial Planning). In particular, project management requires a thorough understanding of time value of money and capital budgeting, and the chapters in these sections should be read by anyone who is assigned as a project manager. Financial planning, especially from the perspective of IT asset management, is another knowledge area in which IT consultants should be well versed.

The other parts of the book (II Valuation and V Options and Corporate Finance) will be more useful to finance professionals and general business managers. There is a collection of supporting material on the author's web site that augment this book, including spreadsheets that can be downloaded. Another plus for the working professional is the book is fast-paced and, dare I say, engrossing.

With lively and colorful artwork
Stanley the stick insect loves to live in the limelight. Just inches from danger, Stanley hangs loose among the twigs and leaves. While friends look on in awe, Stanley daringly outwits hideous toads, mangy rats, and his arch-enemy -- Magpie Mugwort. But then along come the Claggert family and things get sticky for Stanley! Craig Smith's lively and colorful artwork is perfectly suited to Peter Rigby's lively and colorful story about an Australian insect, his friends and foes!

Buy my book, please
I would love it if you bought this book. I'd like it even more if you enjoyed it, and I think you might. You might laugh out loud. You might get nervous at times, especially if you're the least bit claustrophobic. You might learn a bit about academe, Edmonton, feminism, misogyny, and great Christmas tips.

Storefront Revolution: Food Co-Ops and the Counterculture (Perspectives on the Sixties)
Published in Hardcover by Rutgers University Press (September, 1994)
Author: Craig Cox
Average review score:

A look at the co-op movement of the 1970's
This book gives a history of the food co-ops in Minneapolis in the 1970's. I found this book very interesting, mainly because I am a resident of Mpls and learned the history of the co-ops I shop at today. I found the tales of the co-op wars, in which the anarchists and communists battled for control of the co-ops, to be most interesting. I learned about what worked and what didn't work in such a large coaliton of people working towards the same goal. For readers who don't live in the Twin Cities, it is still an interesting study of co-ops and the anti-capitalist movement.
